Canine consent is a topic we chose to look into on the weeks podcast as it’s one of intrigue. There is now a growing number of supporters suggesting that we should ask consent from a dog before certain practices.

However, when there’s an argument for a practice, there is usually one against. So naturally, there is a suggestion that it is not possible for a dog to consent to.

Now, we’re asking for the fact. What are they? What is the supporting science?

Emma Murdoch Walk with me Ottawa

Catching up with Emma Murdock IACP was great as we spent some down time with our number 1 fan. Anyone who’s listened to the show and been in our forums has known this for a while.

Emma Murdock has her own business in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and we got to see it in person. Her business name is Walk with me Ottawa which you can see below in the links.

We have also befriended many of the Walk with me Ottawa gang who have their own Instagram thing going. The first time we saw it we started to realise how neat it was.

We always appreciate our listeners and their support. Emma, as mentioned has been a huge influence with new listeners and people from Ontario and throughout Canada.

She also helps by being a TCP site admin and advocate of many of our beliefs.

Jay Jack on Flexi’s at IACP was always bound to be a topic of controversy and hilarity mixed with education. It’s almost impossible now to know this show and not know Jay Jack as he has contributed a so much. In fact you would most likely know of his podcast with Chad Mackin, Dog training conversations.

So at this years conference, Jay got to present on Flexi Leads and as expected, it was a crowd pleasing topic. Jay was very entertaining and dig a great job of presenting his argument.

If you’re not up to date on Flexi leads, there a great deal of provocation about the safety of their use. Like all tools, there’s a learning curve that must be maintained to master its use.

If you have never heard Jay Jack speak, you’re missing out. He’s very captivating and very real in his delivery and humour which makes his shows so much fun.

We also got to catch up with Jasmine Whiting while she has been travelling around the states. She has been hosting work shops, seminars and kicking butt in BJJ comps. It’s been wonderful to see her so happy and her personal growth coming along in leaps and bounds.

The IACP conference speakers this year have been top notch and it was wonderful to see Jay present.

Episode 94: Our summary abroad is really that. A summary of our time and experience during the Canadian seminar and the IACP conference.

We started with a very long plane flight from Sydney to Montreal, followed by a 2 hour drive the next day to Ottawa. From there we had a little time to settle in before the seminar started.

Over the following days we got to meet and teach some amazing people who were just incredible people. Some of those people even joined us at conference for the IACP.

Following on from there, we left Canada to head back to the USA to meet up with Shawn and Janet Edwards. Every year they hold a trial to honour the memory of Janet’s PSA 3 dog Zuko over a 2 day trail.

Glenn got to learn more judging experience and Pat assisted in decoying. After that we both headed off on another visit of Americas airports to head to the IACP conference.

This years conference was in Colorado Springs with over 500 people attending. It goes without saying that it was an amazing time and we met more great people.

Glenn was asked to join the IACP board of directors and was accepted which was a huge honour.

The entire experience was a blast and the conference ended it well

Larry Krohn IACP 2019 heads up our first of several interviews we had the honour of conducting at this years conference. What an amazing turnout it was too. With over 500 members in attendance, we got to see some amazing presenters and attendees.

No stranger to The Canine Paradigm, Larry Krohn is also known to many around the world. He is a generous Vlogger giving away so much material which has earned a following around the world.

Speaking of Larry and his vlogger efforts, his Youtube views have reached over 7 million views.

Prior ro coming to conference this year, Larry was just coaching in Scotland with another buddy, Duke Furgerson. We got to hear a little of the run down on what they were both doing over there. From the sounds of things, we could learn something from their practices.

A very popular trainer and a hell of a nice guy, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this episode as much as we did.

Habits of attention whores in ANOTHER episode we have now done in response to people in our industry acting poorly! We actually thought we may have been done for a while after episode 88 but no. So here we are once again.

The dog training industry is full of some of the most amazing people you could ever meet. Many of them are so generous and friendly with hearts of gold. But every yin has its yang which means there are some turds too. These are your every day attention whores. Sad people looking for love in all the wrong places.

We need to be doing a lot better for this industry. we have said that quite a lot now and while things are on the improve, there’s more to be done.

Pocket of rocks in a glass house come from the phrase, people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. We’re all guilty of it from time to time. Accusing others of the very things we do ourselves. However, some people don’t realise the damage they are doing to their own reputation.

Of course it’s a metaphor for judgemental hypocrites. The other problem here is that we often joke around about how it’s the industry. If it is prolific in our industry, how are we sustaining such a bad average?

Gardening is supposed to promote growth, not to encourage warfare. Lets practice been gardeners instead. Grow things, be useful, encourage your neighbours to do the same.

Help your neighbourhood, be useful, if you see a problem go help fix it, don’t just create more problems.

Do as I say not as I do is often a mantra echoed via teachers around the world. Sometimes, even parents will suggest this to their children, often for good reason. For example, a parent may drink alcohol which they are at the informed stage of life to do so. The parent would tell the child not to do the very behaviour they do for their own well-being.

However, the topic of this podcast came from our Facebook page and it relates to clients. Do as I say, not as I do is something you tell people to prevent them from making mistakes. We’re talking about mistakes they can’t live with and more from the dogs point of view.

Your client may see you doing something with your own dog and want to mimic your relationship. The problem for them is it may not reflect their ideals.

Our job as trainers is to give our clients the best relationship with their dog. This means we need to pay attention to the things that are most important to them. that way we are more successful at keeping dogs alive and in their original homes.

Interviewing Melanie Benware in this episode was for two reasons. One, to find out a little bit more about her and her business. Two, to discuss her role as President for the IACP.

If you haven’t heard us speak of the IACP before, perhaps you are new to the show? This year we will be the official podcasters for the International Association of Canine Professionals.

As Mentioned above, Melanie has recently assumed the presidential role from our good friend, Tyler Muto.

Being the president in any organisation both comes with its advantages and its disadvantages. The main role of the president is not dissimilar than that of a ships captain. You need a great ship and a great crew to take care of your passengers.

Melanie also shares with us her role of becoming a professional dog trainer which is where all our hearts lie.

Interviewing Greg Tonkins has been on the cards for a while. A fellow Aussie, larakin and bushy from the outback. Greg is well known for several reasons, one of them being great at pig hunting and training pig dogs.

We wanted to speak with Greg about this as he is injecting a bit of a spin on an old tradition. Pig hunting has remained similar in it’s training practices for many years , however Greg is looking to change that.

Greg also chats with us about the negative community feeling towards pig hunting. One of these issues is that people believe these are monster dogs that eat little babies and kill everything. They also have a incorrect image of pigs.

What people fail to realise is that are describing any dog with poor breeding and socialisation practices. Pig dogs in many cases are mixed breed dogs that are also family dogs. They do have a biological capacity for pig hunting, however it still needs to be trained.

We also talk about the negative aspect pigs are having on farm land and the environment. many don’t realise they are an introduced pest and in some cases very dangerous. Pig hunting does help to reduce the numbers and return the endangered species.

There’s a lot more we can tell you about Greg so we will look forward to having a chat with him in the future. We are looking forward to our next interview.
