In Episode 363 of The Canine Paradigm, we talk about a mindset that changes everything, I’m strong enough to tackle this situation. The first step is learning the dog you actually have, not the dog you wish you had. We discuss reading the individual in front of you, understanding what drives them, and identifying where they feel capable versus where they feel unsure.

From there, we focus on confidence. When a dog lacks confidence in a specific area, many owners either avoid it completely or push into it too hard. Neither approach builds real strength. Instead, we explain why you need a skillset that lets you build around the weak column. You develop clear training reps, predictable setups, and controlled exposures that teach the dog it can cope. Over time, the dog stops reacting with the same emotional charge because it now has a history of success.

This episode is about turning uncertainty into capability. It is about showing the dog a path forward, then proving it through repetition. If you are working with a dog that hesitates, startles, shuts down, or overreacts, this conversation will help you build a plan that creates real confidence, not just temporary avoidance.

In Episode 362 of The Canine Paradigm, we start with a short recap from our recent chat with Nick Benger and the wider issue of people in the industry who wear masks to dupe their followers. We talk about how performance and branding can replace honesty, and why that creates confusion for owners trying to do the right thing.

Then we get into the real value of this episode. When training starts to fall apart, most people try to fix the top layer. However, the fastest way forward is often to go back. We explain what it actually means to take a dog owner back through the basics properly, so their skills improve and the dog gets clarity again. We discuss timing, consistency, reinforcement delivery, and clean criteria, because small errors in the basics show up later as big problems in advanced work.

If you have struggled with bad out, recall, loose lead walking, reactivity, or reliability, this episode will help you rebuild the foundation that makes everything else easier. The goal is not to start over out of defeat. The goal is to return to basics with intent, then build forward with confidence.

In Episode 361 of The Canine Paradigm, we sit together in the studio to welcome Dr Melanie Uhde to Australia. Melanie spent a week in the country with Glenn, fitting in as many sights as humanly possible, before delivering two weekend seminars, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne. It was a big week, a lot of learning, and a lot of laughs.

We talk about what it was like bringing evidence-based education to Australian audiences, what stood out in the seminars, and why Melanie’s approach resonates with people who want something solid rather than something performative. Pat also asks Melanie directly about the online trolling and pressure that comes with publicly holding a science-first position. The conversation gets candid. Pat shares his disgust for parts of the industry that hide behind followers, bend the truth, and attack people who bring facts to the table.

This episode is part recap, part behind-the-scenes, and part reality check. If you value integrity, education, and honest discussion in dog training, you will enjoy this one.

When you lie about what you do but it comes out in your work that what you represent doesn’t quite marry up, what does that say about you?

They do say that, ‘actions speak louder than words’. So if you stand on social media and make claims of supporting a methodology that you don’t practice yourself in the shadows, would you call that a lie or an inconvenient truth?

The following is a quote from Dr Jordan Peterson on how we lose our rights. Because of what’s always happening in the dog industry, we hope you’ll understand why we call for a unified community.

“This is how your freedom is taken. Things get to terrible places one tiny step at a time. If I encroach you and I’m sophisticated about it, I’m going to encroach two millimetres. I’m going to encroach right to the point where you begin to protest. Then I’m going to stop.

Then I’m going to wait. I’m going to encroach again, right to the point where you protest. I’m going to stop. And then I’m going to wait. I’m just going to do that forever. Before you know it, you’re going to be back three miles from where you started.

And you’ll have done it one step at a time. You’ll ask “Oh, how did I get here?”. The answer is “Well, I pushed you a little farther than you should have gone, and you agreed.”

J Humps and the right paw is the story of Jen Humphrey, aka Jen Banks. We both met Jen at the IACP conference in Florida.

Jen has recently had a baby and was eager to share her experience of having a dog school, then becoming a new mother. She also did a re-brand which is where the right paw originated from.

If you want to know what on earth the J humps part is all about, well you had better listen to her interview.

You can check Jen’s website here at the Right Paw

Purpose breeding puppies is usually on the minds of owners, trainers, breeders. We wouldn’t say that’s always the case as there are so many people who did it without reason.

Puppies and puppy breeding have come under a lot of scrutiny in the last 10 years. Namely as there are so many puppies that never makes it to adulthood.

However, puppies do play an important part into preserving lineage of carefully planned breeding.

You know we both support rescue, however we both still see relevance in ethical breeding.

Poking Larry Krohn’s bear isn’t easy to do as Larry is a really great guy. However, like most of us, we have a straw that breaks our back under load and this industry can sometimes do that.

Given that Larry has amassed such a large following of people all over the world, he also get some haters. Most of them are just sad, lonely people, some are people who should know better.

Regardless, Larry is a professional and he still loves to help people and we love to chat with him

Reasons for sharing knowledge is that we all have a responsibility to pay it forward. This allows others to use it and even find ways to make it better.

Knowledge is a gift given to all of us. We owe it to ourselves to ensure that we help to raise the ceiling of overall knowledge. This in turn ensures we leave this world in a better way than what we came into it.

Some inspiration minds have summarized their thoughts around sharing knowledge.

In vain have you
acquired knowledge
if you have not
imparted it to others.

Deuteronomy Rabbah

In the long history of humankind
(and animal kind too)
those who learned
to collaborate and
improvise most effectively
have prevailed.

Charles Darwin

Knowledge rests
not upon truth alone,
but upon error also.

Carl Jung

Tyler Muto meditations is a catch up on someone who has does a lot for the industry. Not just that, Tyler is a mate to us and many people around the world.

It was alarming to hear that Tyler had slipped into a depression over the last couple of years. He was kind enough and trusting enough to share that information with us and speak about how he combatted it.

Similar to Tyler, many people fall victim to this silent predator that comes from our dark past. It can hit us without warning and change everything.

This year has also been one that gave plenty of us a punch in the face. It has been hard but we still have each other and we are good for one another.

Just because you don’t understand it, it doesn’t mean it’s not right. This is an epidemic worse than our current pandemic. It’s nothing new, however it appears to be getting worse. Subjects that people clearly don’t understand are passionate subject matter in conversation.

How can we have so many people claiming knowledge in fields they have no experience? Is it more about drama and entertainment that tantalises the taste buds of the public now?

We only ask that people understand the bare minimum before entering into a logical conversation. At least that way we are all discussing the same topic with some authority.

Our additional advise is, don’t ban everything. Educate, learn and comprehend. Truly understand your subject matter
