In Australia, introducing a four-legged friend to the work site has unlocked a unique charm and improved productivity. In an environment often characterized by stress and deadlines, a tail-wagging canine offers a magical and unanticipated boost.

The presence of a dog at a work site serves as a powerful stress reliever. Their capacity to provide unconditional love, coupled with their humorous antics, tends to lighten the work atmosphere, fostering a more relaxed, happier, and ultimately more productive workforce.

Not just confined to offices, dogs are becoming common in construction sites, mines, and farms across Australia. Despite the challenging conditions, these loyal companions display remarkable adaptability. Their presence creates an emotional anchor, promoting camaraderie and a sense of team cohesion, essential in such settings.

Interestingly, dogs also contribute to safety. They’re highly perceptive, often alerting their human colleagues to dangers unseen or unheard. This remarkable canine trait adds an unexpected layer of protection in these environments.

Incorporating dogs into work sites across Australia is undeniably magical. It breaks down barriers, fosters emotional well-being, and enhances productivity. And at the end of the day, who doesn’t enjoy a friendly bark or a wagging tail to lighten up their day?

What do you want to do with your dog?

“Punished by Rewards” by Alfie Kohn delves into the concept of intrinsic motivation, suggesting that rewards can actually be counter-productive, undermining our inherent drive to learn and explore. While primarily focused on humans, this compelling theory has implications for dog training.

Traditionally, reward-based training has been a staple in teaching our canine companions. But should we be wary of over-relying on treats and praise? This question leads us back to the concept of intrinsic motivation. It’s undeniable that dogs possess inherent drives, such as the drive to explore their environment or to play. These intrinsic drives can and should be harnessed in training.

Shifting our focus to nurturing these natural instincts, rather than overwhelming our dogs with extrinsic rewards, could result in a more engaging and satisfying learning experience. This approach encourages dogs to participate not just for the promise of a treat but due to an intrinsic desire to engage, learn, and please.

“Punished by Rewards” nudges us to reconsider the balance between extrinsic rewards and intrinsic motivation in dog training. By placing emphasis on the latter, we can tap into our dogs’ natural instincts, leading to more effective and enriching training outcomes.

In this fascinating episode, we delve deeper into the dynamic world of dog clubs, sharing our rich experiences that encompass managing, operating, and engaging with the colourful tapestry of individuals who breathe life into these clubs. We bring to light both the inspiring stories of those who make the journey truly rewarding, as well as the challenging experiences that test our resilience and passion.

As we continue, we explore an intriguing aspect of dog training: sign tracking. This behavioural phenomenon, when understood and leveraged correctly, can significantly enrich your training approach. However, a lack of awareness about sign tracking can inadvertently lead to complications. For instance, dogs might develop an unintended fixation on a bag of treats rather than the commands, causing potential distractions during training sessions. On the flip side, harnessing the power of sign tracking can expedite and solidify the learning process by associating additional cues with rewards, thereby strengthening the dog’s conditioned response.

Lastly, we lighten the mood with an engaging conversation about teaching and learning within the esteemed domain of dog training. Join us as we navigate the captivating landscape of imparting and acquiring knowledge, yet again reaffirming our dedication to the fascinating industry of dog training.

Bull breeds, children and best case versus Armageddon are once again the topics of discussion that came from surveys within our on-line discussion group.

Bull breeds are well-known for their strength, stamina, and loyalty, but their reputation often suffers due to negative portrayals in the media. However, in a loving environment, breeds like the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier can be fantastic family pets, particularly when socialised with children early and properly.

Children’s behaviour plays a pivotal role in this dynamic. It’s essential to teach them to respect dogs’ boundaries, avoiding aggressive or rough play. In the ideal scenario, a respectful, loving relationship is established, reinforcing positive behaviours both in children and dogs.

To conclude, we were asked about best case scenarios in the dog industry versus all out Armageddon.

Dog training is a journey, underscored by significant transitions through distinct learning phases, each showcasing your dog’s growth and understanding.

Initially, in the Introduction and teaching phase, your dog doesn’t understand the expected behaviour. However, as they begin to recognise the task or command, they naturally transition into the Learning and Association phase. This shift becomes noticeable as your dog starts associating your command with the corresponding action, albeit inconsistently. For example, when you say “sit,” they might occasionally comply.

Gradually, your dog moves into the Refinement and Consistency stage, which is another crucial transition. Here, your dog’s understanding deepens, characterised by improved accuracy and more consistent responses. Now, when you say “sit,” they will more frequently and correctly respond to your command, indicating a clear grasp of the association between the command and the action.

Finally, the most rewarding transition occurs, leading your dog into the Proofing phase. At this point, your dog instinctively responds to your command, indicating that it has become second nature. When you say “sit,” they immediately and correctly respond, regardless of the environment or distractions, signalling a successful transition to mastery.

These transitions form the crux of dog training. Your patience, understanding, and consistent reinforcement will guide these transitions, facilitating your dog’s progression from one phase to the next. Recognising and appreciating these subtle shifts can significantly enhance your effectiveness as a trainer and deepen the bond with your dog.

And of course, we took a bee line into other territories of punishment and other topics that people avoid as it doesn’t appease their audience.

Have a look at an earlier episode we did, Episode 239: Incompatible behaviour & positive punishment

In Part 2 of our conversation with Chad Mackin, we delve deeper into the nuances of dog training methodologies and the role of language in shaping the industry’s future. We discuss the significance of continued education for dog trainers and ways to stay informed and up-to-date in this ever-evolving field, where language plays a crucial part.

Chad shares his experiences with various dog training tools and the importance of using them responsibly and ethically. He also touches on how social media caused some concerns for him and how he managed that for himself, emphasising the role of language in addressing these issues.

We also explore the role of collaboration and mentorship within the dog training community, as Chad highlights the value of learning from one another and fostering a supportive environment for growth and development. Language plays a key role in facilitating this process. Pat and Glenn weigh in on the discussion, sharing their thoughts on the importance of a strong network of like-minded trainers who prioritise animal welfare and ethical practices, all whilst being mindful of the language used in the industry.

We did an earlier podcast called language is important

In our latest episode, we welcome back Chad Mackin to join us for an insightful discussion on the dog training industry. The conversation focused on Chad’s experiences, concerns, and aspirations for the world of dog training, emphasising the importance of better language in the industry.

Chad expressed his concerns about the widespread issue of substandard dog training practices being shared on social media platforms such as, Facebook. He highlighted how these methods not only affect the welfare of dogs and their owners but also have a significant impact on his own state of mind. In a world where poorly executed techniques are often celebrated, we aim to be a change for the industry through better language and practices.

To tackle these challenges, Chad has dedicated himself to developing and promoting better lead pressure training models. These models focus on a more effective, compassionate, and ethically sound approach to dog training whilst maintaining a high standard of care for our canine companions. Pat and Glenn chimed in during the discussion, reiterating the importance of refining industry language to foster better communication and understanding amongst trainers and pet owners.

Have you ever talked to your pets as if they were human beings? If you have, you might have been accused of being anthropomorphic. Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics, emotions, and behaviours to non-human entities such as animals, objects, or even natural phenomena.

Recently, Pat asked Glenn if he was being anthropomorphic when he was observing behaviours from his dogs, Remco and Valerie.

While dogs do feel emotions like joy and fear, they might not necessarily express them in the same way as humans. Dogs might wag their tails when they’re happy, but they might also wag their tails when they’re nervous or excited. It’s important to understand and respect the way that animals communicate.

However, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t talk to our pets or treat them with kindness and respect. Building a strong bond with our pets requires communication and empathy. It’s important to observe and understand their behaviours and needs, and to respond to them appropriately. Whether or not we’re being anthropomorphic, it’s always a good idea to treat our pets like valued members of our family.

When it comes to dogs participating in bite sports, developing their grip strength and technique is a crucial aspect of their training. Proper grip development through good techniques in tug and rag work can help improve a dog’s performance, prevent injuries, and increase their confidence and drive.

In bite sports, such as PSA, Schutzhund, IPO, and French Ring, dogs are trained to bite and hold onto various objects, including sleeves, bite suits, and hidden sleeves. To prepare them for these tasks, trainers use tug and rag work to help develop their grip strength, proper bite technique, and overall confidence.

It’s important to use appropriate equipment when engaging in tug and rag work with a dog training for bite sports. Specifically designed bite tugs and rag toys that mimic the texture and feel of the equipment used in bite sports should be used. This helps the dog learn how to properly grip and hold onto the equipment, while also protecting their teeth from damage.

Proper technique during tug and rag work is also essential for developing a dog’s grip strength and technique. Trainers should let the dog win and avoid forcefully taking the toy away, as this can create negative associations with biting and decrease the dog’s drive. Varying the types of games and toys used in training can also help develop a well-rounded grip.

This recent episode got some great feedback about development too

we had the pleasure of hosting Luke and Panos from the “Life with Your Dog” podcast. They joined us to discuss Joel Turner’s open and closed loop training system, as well as other dog training philosophies.

The conversation was both insightful and engaging. We delved deep into the open and closed loop training system. By using the open and closed loop training system, the Shot IQ system helps archers develop a deeper understanding of their shooting technique and build mental and physical skills. The open loop stage emphasises preparation, visualisation, and clear communication between the trainer and subject. The closed loop stage emphasises observation, evaluation, and adjustment based on feedback.

We also explored other training techniques, such as the importance of understanding a dog’s individual needs and tailoring training techniques accordingly.

Throughout the episode, Luke and Panos provided valuable insights and shared personal anecdotes about their experiences and life with your dog. They also highlighted the importance of patience and consistency when it comes to training a dog.
