In this episode, Pat reveals Glenn his ambitious plan to address the working dog supply and demand issue in Australia by improving working dog genetics in Australia. With a focus on enhancing the genetics of working dogs, Pat’s vision aims to support both law enforcement and sporting groups by producing dogs with superior traits and capabilities.

Pat outlines his strategy to implement a comprehensive breeding program that prioritises health, temperament, and performance. By collaborating with top breeders and leveraging advanced genetic testing, Pat believes it’s possible to significantly improve the quality of working dogs. His plan includes establishing a national facility and program to track the genetic history and performance metrics of breeding pairs, ensuring only the best dogs contribute to future generations.

Improving working dog genetics in Australia is central to Pat’s initiative. This effort is set to revolutionise the working dog landscape, providing law enforcement agencies with more reliable and efficient canine partners. Improving working dog genetics in Australia will also benefit sporting groups, as these dogs will not only be physically adept but also possess the mental fortitude necessary for competitive environments.

Improving working dog genetics in Australia is key to making working dogs great again. Tune in to this insightful episode as Pat shares his detailed approach, highlighting the importance of improving working dog genetics in Australia to shape the future of the country’s canine workforce.

Putting the dog back on lead is a fundamental skill that can significantly enhance training and repair various behavioural issues. Experts in the field emphasise the importance of this practice for both novice and experienced dog owners. They believe that putting the dog back on lead helps reinforce obedience, control, and trust between the handler and the dog.

This practice can correct behaviours such as pulling, lunging, and ignoring commands. When a dog is back on lead, it must focus on the handler, which strengthens the dog’s response to commands. This consistent practice helps dogs understand their boundaries and the expectations set by their owners.

Additionally, putting the dog back on lead can be a confidence booster for both the dog and the owner. It provides a structured environment where the dog can relearn and practice essential skills, making it easier to address and correct unwanted behaviours. The lead acts as a communication tool, guiding the dog and reinforcing positive behaviour.

Incorporating this practice into daily training routines ensures that dogs remain well-behaved and responsive. The simple act of putting the dog back on lead is a powerful method to enhance skills, repair training issues, and foster a stronger bond between the dog and the owner.

We mentioned Flexi leads in this episode and Jay Jack spoke about this in an older episode you can find here

The past couple of weeks in Sydney have been nothing short of amazing. We were thrilled to welcome our American family, Shawn and Janet Edwards, along with their colleagues Zack Burke and Travis Lloyd. Their expertise and passion for training were invaluable as they joined us for PSA trial judging, decoy certification, Deadpool decoy school, and Janet’s seminar.

Training is at the heart of everything we do, and having these experts with us elevated our sessions to new heights. The PSA trial judging was rigorous and insightful, providing our participants with constructive feedback to refine their techniques. Moreover, the decoy certification process was equally intense, ensuring that our decoys are prepared for any scenario.

One of the highlights was the Deadpool decoy school, where Zack and Travis showcased their advanced skills and strategies. This left our team inspired and eager to incorporate these new methods into our training routines. Additionally, Janet’s seminar was another standout, offering deep dives into specialized training techniques that captivated everyone in attendance.

Overall, this experience reinforced the importance of continuous training and collaboration. Consequently, we are grateful to Shawn, Janet, Zack, and Travis for their dedication and expertise. Their contributions have undoubtedly made a lasting impact on our training programs, and we look forward to future collaborations.

In our latest podcast episode, we tackle a critical topic: the peril of false knowledge. While ignorance poses risks, misinformation masquerading as truth can be far more dangerous.

Recently, a comment on social media claimed that men are more likely to attend positive punishment seminars than women. This statement is not only unfounded but also misleading. Throughout our extensive careers in the dog training industry, we have never encountered anyone running or hosting such seminars. Positive punishment, which involves adding an aversive consequence after an undesired behaviour, can be used in training but only under the right circumstances. It should assist the dog in learning how to avoid a behaviour, be used sparingly, and always with compassion.

Furthermore, we delve into the South Australian government’s proposed plan to ban IPG (International Working Dog trial) training. This proposal represents an outrageous example of government overreach. Such regulations not only undermine professional training methods but also spread misinformation about the nature and purpose of IPG. Effective dog training requires balanced, informed approaches that prioritise both the dog’s and the handler’s well-being.

Ignorance can lead to the spread of false knowledge, which can have detrimental effects. By staying informed and questioning dubious claims, we can combat ignorance and promote responsible training practices. Ignorance is a formidable foe, but with the right knowledge, we can overcome it. Join us as we debunk these myths and advocate for knowledge-based approaches. By listening to our podcast, you can stay informed and help combat the spread of false knowledge in the dog training community. Stay tuned, stay informed, and let’s work together to promote truth and excellence in our field.

We have other episodes worth listening to which are similar like this

In our latest podcast episode, we eagerly addressed key questions from our listeners about training dogs, particularly focusing on the importance of ‘warming’ when transitioning from indoor to outdoor environments. Our listeners are curious about how to maintain a strong connection with their dogs amidst a swag of new outdoor stimuli, and we were excited to delve into these challenges.

Firstly, warming your dog for a training session isn’t just about tiring them out; it’s about mentally preparing them for the shift in context from a calm indoor setting to a stimulating outdoor space. We emphasized starting with familiar commands like ‘sit’ and ‘look at me’ to help redirect your dog’s focus from distractions back to you. This approach not only primes them for learning but also reinforces your bond.

Furthermore, we discussed the value of a physical warm-up. A brisk walk or a playful fetch session can significantly reduce excess energy, thus improving your dog’s concentration. These activities should be seen not just as exercise, but as integral parts of your training routine that prepare your dog for the mental challenges ahead.

Ultimately, our discussion aimed to provide practical tips for our listeners, showing that with the right warming techniques, transitioning from indoor to outdoor training can be a smooth, effective process. Tune in to learn how these strategies can enhance your training sessions and deepen the connection with your dog.

We delved into the fascinating world of dog training, focusing on the suppression of behaviours, the concept of dogs “guessing” behaviours, and the powerful dynamics of perception between teacher and student. This discussion sheds light on how understanding and managing these elements can significantly enhance the training process and the relationship between dogs and their trainers.

Suppression of unwanted behaviours is a critical aspect of dog training. It involves identifying behaviours that may be problematic or dangerous and using effective training methods to reduce or eliminate them. However, it’s important to approach suppression with a strategy that promotes an understanding, rather than just punishment. This method not only fosters a safer environment but also strengthens the bond between the dog and the trainer.

Furthermore, the idea that dogs may “guess” behaviours highlights the need for clear and consistent communication during training sessions. Dogs often try to anticipate commands and may end up performing the wrong actions. Trainers must be patient and persistent in guiding their canine students, helping them to learn and respond appropriately without confusion.

The power of perception in the relationship between teacher and student cannot be overstated. The way a trainer perceives a dog’s behaviour and the dog’s perception of the trainer’s intentions both play crucial roles in the effectiveness of training. Understanding and adapting to each other’s signals and behaviours can lead to more successful outcomes and a more harmonious relationship.

In our newest podcast episode, we explore the integration of working dogs into households and address the misleading advice suggesting that these dogs disrupt home dynamics. Despite these myths, working dogs can enhance home life, especially when combined with the right remote training techniques. These methods, often misunderstood, can actually strengthen your bond with your working dog rather than hinder it..

A significant portion of our discussion also focuses on the controversial use of electric collars or remote trainers. This often brings to mind images of harsh control methods. However, our conversation sheds light on the lack of scientific evidence supporting the notion that these tools are inherently cruel. It’s crucial for dog owners to consider both the potential benefits and the proper usage of remote training devices to ensure they are used ethically and effectively.

Furthermore, we explore a rather peculiar behaviour—dogs eating their own faeces. While this may seem alarming to many pet owners, we provide insights into why this happens and how it can be managed. Understanding the root causes can help owners address this behaviour more sympathetically.
