In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, Pat asks Glenn about travelling around Australia to work with Pet Resorts Australia teams on the floor. The focus is showing staff how to read dog behaviour in real time, so social boarding and daycare stay safe, structured, and enjoyable. We discuss how to set sessions up well, how to brief simple rules, and how to notice the early signs that a group needs a reset.

We cover practical ideas staff can apply immediately. For example, start with a calm entry, match energy levels, and use short check-ins to keep arousal steady. Then, read the small signals that precede problems, such as fixed stares, speeding up, stillness, or crowding. If you see them, you can redirect, split, or take a short break before tension grows. Finally, record what mattered so the next shift benefits from the same clarity.

It is a straightforward conversation about staff confidence, safer choices, and keeping the experience good for dogs and people.

In this lively and insightful episode, Glenn sits down in person with three of the industry’s entertaining and passionate figures, Jacob Morgan from the Yorkshire Canine Academy, Ian Kirke, also from YCA, and Simon Moody (aka the Mutt Nut, aka the Best Dog Trainer in the Universe).

Unfortunately, Pat couldn’t join us for the episode, but when the universe gifts you the Mutt Nut, you’ve got to shake and bake.

What follows is a candid conversation filled with laughs, stories, and reflections on the dog training industry as it stands today. We discuss some of the things we love most about the work we do and the community we’re part of, but we also explore the challenges and frustrations that come with it.

Whether you’re a trainer, a dog owner, or just someone who appreciates real talk and real dogs, this episode brings a blend of humour, heart, and hard-earned perspective from people deeply immersed in the craft.

In this emotionally charged episode, Glenn and Pat hit the reset button after scrapping their original recording, something we don’t often do. The reason? Frustration and sadness. The original session had been overshadowed by anger and disbelief at the overwhelming wave of negativity sweeping through both the dog training community and the wider world.

Rather than push out content clouded by emotion, we chose to re-record with clearer intent, to voice their concern, reflect more calmly, and explore why it feels like something is very wrong right now.

The conversation touches on a wide range of disturbing behaviours, events, and trends that seem to be surfacing more frequently, whether in the dog world, where dishonesty and division are growing, or in society at large. One example mentioned is Charlie Kirk, whose assassination happened just days after we had mentioned him in passing, highlighting just how volatile and shocking some people are behaving right now.

As seasoned professionals who work to better the lives of dogs and their people, Glenn and Pat ask the deeper questions: How do we maintain sanity in this kind of chaos? Where do we find our personal compass when values are blurred and trust is eroded?

This episode won’t offer answers, but it’s a raw, thoughtful reflection worth hearing. If you’ve been feeling the heaviness too, you’re not alone.

In this episode, Glenn and Pat take a hard look at the ethical cracks forming in the professional dog training industry. Prompted by Justin Rigney, who continues to call out deceptive trainers, telling lies or hiding their use of tools, we dive deep into the consequences of rewarding the wrong behaviours, not in dogs, but in people.

Too often, we see professionals extending hospitality, collaboration, and trust to individuals or organisations who do not reciprocate. These individuals happily accept support and visibility, while simultaneously working to undermine the very values and standards that good trainers work so hard to uphold. This episode challenges that imbalance. Why do we keep giving platforms to those who distort the narrative or operate in bad faith?

Furthermore, we explore how the desire to be liked or seen as reasonable sometimes results in us turning a blind eye. However, in doing so, we can inadvertently harm the industry, our clients, and ultimately, the dogs themselves. There comes a time when drawing a line is no longer a matter of ego, but a professional and moral imperative.

If you’re tired of watching good people get burned while others flourish through manipulation and dishonesty, this episode is for you.

In this powerful episode of The Canine Paradigm, Glenn and Pat reconnect with one of their favourite guests, Dr Melanie Uhde. Known for her no-nonsense, science-first approach to canine behaviour and training, Melanie has become a respected but polarising figure in the dog world.

Her deep dives into peer-reviewed research and willingness to challenge misinformation have been applauded by many, but they’ve also drawn the ire of some high-profile dog trainers more concerned with protecting their brand than evolving with the truth.

We discuss the toll of speaking out in a field still dominated by ego, outdated narratives, and commercial agendas. Melanie opens up about some of the shocking threats and intimidation she’s received simply for presenting facts. But through it all, her resolve remains: stay true to the science and protect dogs from the fallout of flawed ideologies.

If you care about what’s real and what works, this is an episode you don’t want to miss.

In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, Glenn and Pat unpack a viral video that’s got social media buzzing. It shows a dog walking into a situation and seemingly “resolving” a behavioural issue between other dogs, sparking all kinds of commentary about dominance, energy, and control. But is that really what’s going on?

Glenn and Pat break down what might actually be happening, without the hype or projection and why it’s important to remain critical of viral interpretations dressed up as truth.

The episode also revisits the ongoing debate about training tool bans. Why are certain people and groups still trying to outlaw effective tools that improve dog welfare and handler safety? The discussion explores the motivations behind these bans and the harm they cause when politics overrides practical knowledge.

Finally, the show calls out the growing number of individuals claiming expertise in dog training without the depth, experience, or results to back it up. When status becomes self-declared, it undermines real learning and misleads dog owners looking for help.

This is one of those episodes where we say what others won’t, because dogs deserve better.

In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, we respond to a thought-provoking question from one of our listeners: Is burning out the same as failing? Burnout is a topic that hits close to home for many dog trainers, handlers, and professionals working in emotionally and physically demanding environments.

Glenn and Pat dive into the nuances of burnout—how it differs from failure, where the overlap exists, and why it’s essential to make the distinction. They discuss personal insights, the mental weight of pressure and expectation, and the cultural narratives that often conflate stepping back with giving up.

We also invite our community to weigh in. If this resonates with you, we’d love to hear your perspective about burnout in The Canine Paradigm Facebook group, where the discussion continues.

This week’s episode of The Canine Paradigm is one of the hardest we’ve ever had to record. Episode 334: You Made Me a Better Trainer is a deeply personal tribute to Randy, who recently passed away.

Sometimes, putting out an episode makes things all too real—and that was the case here. Avoiding the microphone felt easier than confronting the grief. But Randy deserves to be honoured properly. He wasn’t just a dog—he was a mentor, a friend, and someone who profoundly shaped how I train. he was a big loss to Narelle and I

In this episode, Pat and I reflect on the lessons he taught us—some spoken, some quietly observed—and the immense gratitude we feel for having known him. There are dogs who enter your life and leave a mark that never fades. Randy was one of those dogs.

“The greatness of a dog is not in how he dies, but in how he lives, and the lives he touches along the way.” Glenn Cooke

This isn’t a typical training episode. It’s a conversation from the heart, shared with everyone who knew Randy or has ever had someone change their life in the way he changed mine.

In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, we sit down with Neil Barnsley from Animal Holistic Therapies, a practitioner whose expertise in chiropractic and acupuncture for dogs has changed countless lives. Neil was one of the key people who helped Ladybug walk again, proving the power of alternative therapies in canine rehabilitation.

Neil’s journey into holistic animal treatments was inspired by both his father and grandfather, who introduced him to these healing methods. Over the years, he has worked with a wide variety of breeds, from those with severe spinal injuries to dogs given poor prognoses—many of whom he has helped regain mobility.

During this conversation, we discuss the effectiveness of chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture in treating mobility issues, spinal conditions, and chronic pain in dogs. Whether you’re new to these therapies or curious about their benefits, Neil shares compelling insights into how alternative medicine can support canine health and recovery.

In this episode of The Canine Paradigm, we welcome our first guest of 2025, Gavin Crown, one of the few individuals in the world certified to teach CrossFit. As an expert in structured training, Gavin brings a fresh perspective on how fitness principles could enhance dog training.

Many dog training methods rely on subjective assessments. However, fitness training follows a structured approach that tracks progress over time. By applying similar principles, trainers could improve their ability to measure a dog’s development, adjust training strategies, and ensure long-term success.

Additionally, Glenn discusses an issue that is slowing down progress in the dog training industry. While trainers constantly seek to refine their techniques, some member groups actively block innovations. As a result, many professionals face unnecessary roadblocks, preventing real advancements in dog training.

So, how can we change this? This episode explores practical solutions, offering a new way to think about progress. By combining structured tracking with modern training approaches, we can create a more effective and accountable system for trainers and dog owners alike.
