In the classic tale The Emperor’s New Clothes, the emperor is deceived into believing he is wearing fine garments when, in fact, he is wearing nothing at all. Similarly, some dog trainers on social media are forcing a narrative of success that does not truly exist. They craft stories of quick fixes and foolproof methods, but when dog owners apply these methods, the results often fall short. As a result, dog owners frequently find themselves frustrated when reality fails to meet the promises made by these trainers.

By forcing a narrative of success, these trainers rely heavily on flashy marketing and carefully edited videos to push their agenda. They insist their methods are perfect and will yield guaranteed results. However, when dog owners try to replicate these techniques at home, they soon discover that the narrative doesn’t hold up. The promises of instant transformation simply do not deliver in real-world situations.

Furthermore, these trainers often double down on forcing a narrative by blaming the dog owners when the methods fail. Instead of admitting that the training approach may be flawed, they claim the owner didn’t follow instructions properly. Consequently, dog owners end up doubting their abilities rather than recognising that the real issue lies in the forced narrative itself.

Therefore, to avoid being misled by such tactics, it is crucial for dog owners to find trainers who focus on delivering real, sustainable results rather than forcing a narrative that only serves to build their social media presence. Just as the emperor eventually realised he had been deceived, dog owners must see through the illusion. In the end, forcing a narrative may create temporary attention, but genuine success comes from proven, effective training methods that stand the test of time.

In Episode 310 of The Canine Paradigm, we discuss the dog training Rachael Raygun Olympic scandal and its implications for both the sports world and our industry. The controversy surrounding Rachael Raygun’s performance highlights a troubling trend: the perceived privilege of those with academic credentials, particularly PhDs, as the sole authorities on complex issues.

However, this bias isn’t limited to sports. In dog training, the divide between those with formal academic qualifications and those with extensive practical experience continues to grow. The dog training Rachael Raygun Olympic scandal shows that assuming PhDs alone hold all the answers is misguided. Moreover, this mindset creates rifts within our industry and undervalues the real-world expertise that experienced trainers bring to the table.

Furthermore, we’re concerned about the ongoing narrative that unfairly targets balanced trainers. Labelling these professionals as “punishment trainers” relies on emotional misinformation, which only serves to divide the community. This kind of gas lighting is exhausting and does nothing to improve dog training quality or the well-being of the dogs we care for.

Therefore, it’s time for a more balanced approach—one that respects both academic knowledge and practical experience. By fostering a more inclusive and open-minded discussion, we can create better outcomes for everyone, whether in the sports arena or within the dog training field.

n Episode 309 of our podcast, we dive into the critical concept of the canine ladder of aggression. This episode is a must-listen for both new and experienced dog trainers, as we break down the visual tool that illustrates the various levels of aggression in dogs, ranging from subtle signals to more overt behaviours.

Using the traffic light system, the ladder of aggression is an essential framework that helps trainers and handlers understand where a dog might be on the spectrum of stress and aggression. This system categorises the dog’s behaviour into green, yellow, and red zones, representing calm, warning, and dangerous stages, respectively.

Understanding these levels is crucial for preventing escalation and managing situations effectively. By recognising early signs of discomfort, trainers can intervene before a dog reaches a critical point, ensuring safer interactions for both dogs and handlers.

In a recent podcast episode, we addressed a controversial claim regarding the origins of dog sports, specifically an unfounded assertion that these activities and police dogs have ties to Nazi Germany. However, it is crucial to clarify that the origins of dog sports, such as obedience, agility, and protection work, are deeply rooted in history, well before any association with extremist ideologies. These sports were developed to enhance the bond between humans and dogs, promote physical fitness, and celebrate canine capabilities.

Moreover, the spread of misinformation, often perpetuated by content creators on platforms like YouTube, can distort the true origins of dog sports. Some creators, unfortunately, prioritize sensationalism over accuracy to attract views and generate income, which can lead to misleading narratives. Therefore, it’s essential for viewers to critically assess the sources of information. Additionally, content creators should uphold standards of accuracy and responsibility to avoid spreading falsehoods.

here’s an episode where we talk about the building of PSA

In the latest episode of the Canine Paradigm, hosts Pat Stuart and Glenn Cooke dive into the nuanced and often controversial topic of how pharmaceuticals could be affecting the dog training industry. On a on-line discussion with Bill Church, also known as Bow Wow Bill, they discussed the increasing prevalence of medications prescribed to dogs and the implications for trainers and pet owners alike.

Glenn shares insights from his personal experiences, reflecting on advice from colleagues about the importance of active listening. This episode is a blend of personal growth and professional critique, highlighting the ethical considerations surrounding the use of medications in behaviour modification.

The conversation takes a critical look at the over-prescription of SSRIs and other medications, questioning whether the push for these treatments is influenced by pharmaceutical companies’ profit motives. They explore the challenges trainers face when working with medicated dogs, emphasising the need for a balanced approach that prioritises ethical practices and the well-being of the dogs.

Listeners will appreciate the deep dive into how societal changes, such as those brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, have further complicated these issues. This episode is a must-listen for anyone involved in dog training, offering valuable perspectives on the intersection of health, ethics, and effective training methods.

Putting the dog back on lead is a fundamental skill that can significantly enhance training and repair various behavioural issues. Experts in the field emphasise the importance of this practice for both novice and experienced dog owners. They believe that putting the dog back on lead helps reinforce obedience, control, and trust between the handler and the dog.

This practice can correct behaviours such as pulling, lunging, and ignoring commands. When a dog is back on lead, it must focus on the handler, which strengthens the dog’s response to commands. This consistent practice helps dogs understand their boundaries and the expectations set by their owners.

Additionally, putting the dog back on lead can be a confidence booster for both the dog and the owner. It provides a structured environment where the dog can relearn and practice essential skills, making it easier to address and correct unwanted behaviours. The lead acts as a communication tool, guiding the dog and reinforcing positive behaviour.

Incorporating this practice into daily training routines ensures that dogs remain well-behaved and responsive. The simple act of putting the dog back on lead is a powerful method to enhance skills, repair training issues, and foster a stronger bond between the dog and the owner.

We mentioned Flexi leads in this episode and Jay Jack spoke about this in an older episode you can find here

The past couple of weeks in Sydney have been nothing short of amazing. We were thrilled to welcome our American family, Shawn and Janet Edwards, along with their colleagues Zack Burke and Travis Lloyd. Their expertise and passion for training were invaluable as they joined us for PSA trial judging, decoy certification, Deadpool decoy school, and Janet’s seminar.

Training is at the heart of everything we do, and having these experts with us elevated our sessions to new heights. The PSA trial judging was rigorous and insightful, providing our participants with constructive feedback to refine their techniques. Moreover, the decoy certification process was equally intense, ensuring that our decoys are prepared for any scenario.

One of the highlights was the Deadpool decoy school, where Zack and Travis showcased their advanced skills and strategies. This left our team inspired and eager to incorporate these new methods into our training routines. Additionally, Janet’s seminar was another standout, offering deep dives into specialized training techniques that captivated everyone in attendance.

Overall, this experience reinforced the importance of continuous training and collaboration. Consequently, we are grateful to Shawn, Janet, Zack, and Travis for their dedication and expertise. Their contributions have undoubtedly made a lasting impact on our training programs, and we look forward to future collaborations.
