Normal for the spider comes from the Morticia Adams quote, “What’s normal for the spider is chaos for the fly”.

In this episode, we try and break down what normal is or more so, what it’s become. What’s normal now does not echo what was normal 5, 10, 20 years ago.

Today, wearing masks and going into lock down has become normal. Even though it’s completely abnormal, it’s an unfortunate part of what we have to accept.

But what is normal dog behaviour? What’s a normal dog? What is normal training?

Who sets the guidelines on what became normal or is it just acceptance of something that creeps up on us over time?

Rabbits never jumps into wolves mouths is a term the most new decoys will hear. For all intents and purposes it’s true. Rabbits doesn’t jump into the mouth of a predator. It does what most healthy prey will do and it will run its ass off trying to survive.

The rabbit reference is usually used when the new decoy tries to throw the tug or sleeve into the dogs mouth. Being a young decoy, I recall one of the experience trainers giving me the rabbit reference.

The sentiment made sense and I took it on board, however over the years the concept didn’t exactly stack up.

This episode is not only about wolves and rabbits. It also has a message on using strong language to make a point and how that can be taken out of context.

Impostor syndrome is one of those horrible nagging doubts that some of occasionally experience. Being in a position of thinking you’re an impostor can be crippling. Thinking that you will fail in front of people and they will find you out can be suffocating.

There are so many people in so many professions that go through this torment on a regular basis. The terrible truth is, they are generally incredibly competent.

An impostor is someone who is a genuine fraud. They steal identities and work from others and claim it as their own.

If you are feeling like an impostor, make sure that you are making time to speak with the right people about correcting this negative phrase.

If you are an impostor and you are fraudulent in stealing peoples work and material, it’s time to lift your game. Do something better with your life. Maybe try a healthy dose of authenticity.

Slave to genetics is a topic that comes up a lot in trainer conversations when we can’t quite explain our dogs behaviour. There are times when you just have to ask yourself why and it may just come down to genetics after all.

However, is genetics always the culprit? Are we quick to allow that to be the excuse? Could it be a case of improper understanding or input of new behaviours?

There are more than just one reason as to why both humans and dogs, (and all the other species) do what they do.

It could be genetics, it could be the control of stimuli or it could be mental impairment. It is a good reason for us to look a little deeper sometimes when we need a validation.
