In a world where poorly executed techniques are often celebrated, we aim to be a change for the industry through better language and practices.

To tackle these challenges, Chad has dedicated himself to developing and promoting better lead pressure training models. These models focus on a more effective, compassionate, and ethically sound approach to dog training whilst maintaining a high standard of care for our canine companions. Have you ever talked to your pets as if they were human beings? If you have, you might have been accused of being anthropomorphic. Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics, emotions, and behaviours to non-human entities such as animals, objects, or even natural phenomena.

Recently, Pat asked Glenn if he was being anthropomorphic when he was observing behaviours from his dogs, Remco and Valerie.

While dogs do feel emotions like joy and fear, they might not necessarily express them in the same way as humans. Dogs might wag their tails when they’re happy, but they might also wag their tails when they’re nervous or excited. It’s important to understand and respect the way that animals communicate.

However, that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t talk to our pets or treat them with kindness and respect. Building a strong bond with our pets requires communication and empathy. It’s important to observe and understand their behaviours and needs, and to respond to them appropriately. Whether or not we’re being anthropomorphic, it’s always a good idea to treat our pets like valued members of our family.

When it comes to dogs participating in bite sports, developing their grip strength and technique is a crucial aspect of their training. Proper grip development through good techniques in tug and rag work can help improve a dog’s performance, prevent injuries, and increase their confidence and drive.

In bite sports, such as PSA, Schutzhund, IPO, and French Ring, dogs are trained to bite and hold onto various objects, including sleeves, bite suits, and hidden sleeves. To prepare them for these tasks, trainers use tug and rag work to help develop their grip strength, proper bite technique, and overall confidence.

It’s important to use appropriate equipment when engaging in tug and rag work with a dog training for bite sports. Specifically designed bite tugs and rag toys that mimic the texture and feel of the equipment used in bite sports should be used. This helps the dog learn how to properly grip and hold onto the equipment, while also protecting their teeth from damage.

Proper technique during tug and rag work is also essential for developing a dog’s grip strength and technique. Trainers should let the dog win and avoid forcefully taking the toy away, as this can create negative associations with biting and decrease the dog’s drive. Varying the types of games and toys used in training can also help develop a well-rounded grip.

we had the pleasure of hosting Luke and Panos from the “Life with Your Dog” podcast. They joined us to discuss Joel Turner’s open and closed loop training system, as well as other dog training philosophies.

The conversation was both insightful and engaging. We delved deep into the open and closed loop training system. By using the open and closed loop training system, the Shot IQ system helps archers develop a deeper understanding of their shooting technique and build mental and physical skills. The open loop stage emphasises preparation, visualisation, and clear communication between the trainer and subject. The closed loop stage emphasises observation, evaluation, and adjustment based on feedback.

We also explored other training techniques, such as the importance of understanding a dog’s individual needs and tailoring training techniques accordingly.

Throughout the episode, Luke and Panos provided valuable insights and shared personal anecdotes about their experiences and life with your dog. They also highlighted the importance of patience and consistency when it comes to training a dog.

But it’s important to remember that aggression in dogs is not uncommon and can be caused by a variety of factors, such as fear, anxiety, or a medical condition.

One of the keys to dealing with aggressive behaviour in dogs is to understand what triggers it. By identifying the root cause of the behaviour, dog owners can take steps to address the issue and work towards a solution. It’s also essential to seek the help of a professional canine trainer or behaviourist to guide you through the process.

Seeing your dog in a new light can be a challenging experience, but it can also be an opportunity for growth and understanding. By working with your pet and seeking professional help, you can build a stronger bond with your mate and help them overcome any behavioural issues they may be facing.

Dog owners often unwittingly trigger certain behaviours in their pets, without realising the implications of their actions. While the owners may not understand what they did, the dog’s perception of the situation is entirely different. Due to the data it has collected, the dog’s brain sees this as a cue to run a particular program.

This phenomenon is not uncommon, and it’s a result of a dog’s ability to learn and adapt to its environment. Dogs are highly intelligent animals, and they have an exceptional sense of awareness, which they use to process the data they receive from their surroundings. This data includes everything from sounds and smells to body language and subtle cues from their owners.

Dog owners who don’t understand this can unwittingly trigger certain behaviours in their pets. For example, a dog may learn to associate a particular sound with a particular behaviour. Suppose an owner regularly uses a specific sound or word when it’s time to eat. In that case, the dog may start to associate that sound with food and run to the kitchen, anticipating its next meal.

In both cases, the dog has learned to run a specific program based on the data it has received from its environment. However, the owner may not even be aware of the cues they are giving their pet. This lack of understanding can lead to frustration on both sides, with the owner wondering why their dog behaves in a certain way and the dog feeling confused and uncertain.

To avoid this problem, it’s essential for dog owners to understand how their actions and cues can influence their pet’s behaviour.

Episode 252: When it’s time for behavioural euthanasia

As much as we all love our canine companions, sometimes behavioural issues arise that can make life with them difficult and even dangerous. In some cases, these issues can be so severe that they pose a threat to not only the safety of others but to the dog itself. In such situations, the difficult decision to consider euthanasia may arise.

It’s important to note that behavioural euthanasia should always be a last resort, and only considered after all other options have been exhausted. This includes seeking the help of a professional dog trainer or behaviourist, and exploring any potential medical issues that may be contributing to the dog’s behaviour.

However, in some cases, the risks associated with a dog’s behaviour may simply be too great to manage safely, and euthanasia may be the most humane option.

For many dog owners, the decision to euthanize a beloved pet is a heart-wrenching one. It can be particularly traumatic when the decision is based on behavioural issues rather than physical health problems. Owners may feel a sense of guilt, grief, and loss, and may struggle to come to terms with the decision.

It’s important for owners to seek support during this difficult time. This may include talking to a trusted friend or family member, seeking the help of a therapist or counsellor, or joining a support group for pet owners who have gone through similar experiences.

It’s also important to remember that the decision to euthanize a dangerous dog is not a reflection of the owner’s love for their pet. In fact, it can be a selfless act of love, made in the best interests of both the dog and the wider community.

Ultimately, choosing to euthanasia for a dangerous dog is a deeply personal decision that should be made with careful consideration and the guidance of professionals. While it may be a difficult and traumatic experience, it is sometimes necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved.

With over two decades of experience in the media industry, Lara Shannon has become a household name. Reaching millions of people each year through her education work, books, and TV shows, Lara has helped improve the lives of companion animals.

As a certified dog trainer and pet food nutrition specialist, Lara has worked with high-profile animal welfare and conservation organizations such as the World Wide Fund for Nature, Planet Ark, and The Orangutan Project, to name a few. Her debut documentary, Ecochick Adventures: The Trans Borneo Challenge, raised awareness of the plight of the orangutan, and since then, Lara has shifted her focus to the animals in our own backyards.

Lara is the Executive Producer and Host of Channel 10’s Pooches at Play and Editor of Poochesatplay.com. She also recently launched her latest TV project, Animal SOS Australia, which will air on 7TWO and 7Plus from March 5th, 2023. Lara is also a sought-after speaker for pet events and expos, including the Australian Dog Lovers Show, the Cat Lovers Show, and Pets in the Park.

As an Ambassador for Second Chance Animal Rescue, Companion Animal Network Australia, and the Companion Animal Rescue Awards, Lara is on a mission to reduce the needless euthanasia of adoptable shelter animals to zero. She is the author of World of Dogs and Eat, Play, Love (Your Dog), published by Hardie Grant Books and available worldwide.

So, join us as we chat with Lara and get to know more about her life as a canine expert and animal welfare advocate. And keep an ear out for her cheeky rescue dogs, Dynamite Darcy and Vindi, who are never far from her side.

Episode 250: Barking to biting and premacking behaviour

Dogs may develop the behaviour of barking to biting when they feel frustrated and their drives are not properly addressed. This behaviour can have various underlying causes, but it is often associated with fear or frustration. For instance, if a dog is barking at a person or another animal and feels unheard or misunderstood, it may resort to biting to communicate its message.

Socialising the dog and ensuring it has positive interactions with people and animals can help. Additionally, training the dog to respond to verbal commands and having a solid recall can redirect its attention and prevent it from escalating to biting.

Another helpful technique in dog training is premacking behaviour, which was first introduced by psychologist David Premack. Specifically, this technique involves using a high-probability behavior to reinforce a low-probability behaviour.

For example, if a dog loves playing fetch but dislikes going for walks, using premacking behaviour can increase its motivation to go for walks. Rewarding it with a game of fetch after a walk can help associate the walk with a positive outcome.

Using premacking behaviour correctly in dog training is essential. Firstly, the high-probability behaviour should always be something that the dog finds enjoyable. Additionally, the low-probability behaviour should be something that the dog needs to do to receive the reward.
