In this powerful episode of The Canine Paradigm, Glenn and Pat reconnect with one of their favourite guests, Dr Melanie Uhde. Known for her no-nonsense, science-first approach to canine behaviour and training, Melanie has become a respected but polarising figure in the dog world.

Her deep dives into peer-reviewed research and willingness to challenge misinformation have been applauded by many, but they’ve also drawn the ire of some high-profile dog trainers more concerned with protecting their brand than evolving with the truth.

We discuss the toll of speaking out in a field still dominated by ego, outdated narratives, and commercial agendas. Melanie opens up about some of the shocking threats and intimidation she’s received simply for presenting facts. But through it all, her resolve remains: stay true to the science and protect dogs from the fallout of flawed ideologies.

If you care about what’s real and what works, this is an episode you don’t want to miss.

  1. Hey guys,
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for the work you’re doing with this podcast. A friend recently recommended it after we were talking about how, in the dog world—like so many other areas—there’s often no clear source of truth. So much advice out there feels either overly emotional or completely lacking in real science. She pointed me your way, and this past week I listened to the episodes with Dr. Uhde and Jacob Morgan—both of which absolutely blew me away.

I’m not a trainer, just a dog owner. I have a five-year-old Aussie, my first dog ever. I got her because I wanted an intelligent, trainable companion I could take everywhere—on planes, trips, into public spaces. I took the responsibility seriously. Back in March 2020, I did all the things a “responsible” owner was supposed to do: studied the breed, committed to the work, and even followed Zak George religiously (yes, I got pulled in—but to be fair, I did learn a lot from him too). My dog and I were walking 7–10 miles a day since we lived in an apartment at the time.

But then… we hit a wall. She started developing noise sensitivities and showed aggression toward kids. I reached out for help and unknown to me ended up with a purely positive trainer. Unfortunately, the advice I received felt more like avoidance than actual problem-solving: stuff Kongs, close the blinds, run a white noise machine 24/7, and never allow her around children again.

I wish I had known then what I’m learning now. Eventually, I found a more balanced trainer—Debra Nagler—who introduced us to a proper heel for the first time. It felt like magic. Our walks became calmer, more connected. I finally felt like I was working with my dog instead of walking on eggshells around her.

Now, five years in, I’m just starting to see this conversation open up for owners like me. I wish I had known these perspectives earlier. I wish more people talked about it without judgment, without ego, and with respect for both dogs and humans doing their best.

So thank you. Thank you for being willing to dig into the gray areas. Thank you for prioritizing facts over fads, and for advocating for dogs—and for the owners trying their hardest not to mess it up. I’m still learning, and this podcast is now part of that journey. You’re making a difference not just for the next generation of trainers, but for everyday owners who want to do right by their dogs—even if it takes a few mistakes and course corrections to get there.

    Gratefully,
    Jen

      Hi Jen,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story. Your message genuinely means a great deal to Pat and me.

You sound like an incredibly committed owner who has always tried to do the right thing for your dog. Being willing to question, learn and adjust course is something to be proud of.

We’re very glad you found the podcast and that these conversations have helped. Owners like you are exactly why we keep doing it.

      Warm regards,

      Glenn
